His devotion to Jesus was absolute and uncompromising. Francis saw in the crucified Christ the ultimate example to imitate, yearning not only to serve the poor, but to become poor himself, poor in spirit and poor in worldly goods. Through loving poverty, Francis found immeasurable riches in Christ. His deep reverence for the Holy Eucharist and the Church shines through centuries, as does his passionate love for all of God's creation. Through relentless perseverance, he became a simple parish priest in the tiny, spiritually indifferent town of ours. What followed stands among the most astonishing pastoral miracles in the church's history. St. John Viani understood the priesthood as a radical call to self-sacrifice for souls. He spent sixteen to eighteen hours a day in the confessional, reconciling penitence to God before the tabernacle, kings, peasants, skeptics, and penitents, from faraway lands journeyed to ours, drawn not by spectacle, but by the palpable sense of heaven that seemed to rest on this worn and fragile priest. He ate little, slept less, and offered his every suffering for the conversion of sinners. His reputation for reading souls in confession, and even working miracles, earned him the affectionate title, the Apostle of the Confessional, but at the heart of his ministry was an unwavering devotion to the Eucharist. He would often say, The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus.
